And as a religious computer scientist once speculated, perhaps a merciful God would endow an artificial intelligent life form with a soul. I also believe that many animals have a degree of self-awareness and therefore have a form of a soul and even an afterlife of some kind. I can't prove any of this, but it comforts me to think of it.
