As a recent past master, I really cant justify Masonic membership by Jewish members. Masonry has a very nice vibe, and is a great organization. any intellectual investigation of everyday tenents disqualifies Jewish membership, at least my future participation. Mainly, the exitance of a universal g-d is contrary to Jewish belief, as is kneeling before an alter with a christian bible place on it, open to specific pages. much of the ritual, especially the closing charge is cu t and pasted from the christian bible. the lords prayer is used in funeral services. if a jewish candidate isnt tuned in or concerned about such things, there is nothing sinister about masonry, and it can be a rewarding experience.

How can a Jew be a freemason? What a blasphemy, what kind of Avoda Zara is that?

I am against most of what Obama stands for, but on this he is right. When we begin to disregard the basic principles of our constitution, we are handing the terrorists a major victory. We must understand that the vast majority of Muslims are good moral people. The extremists are the ones causing the damage and they are a disgrace to most Muslims. Christians have had their extremists as well.....think of the loonies who protest at soldiers funerals, the KKK, and other Christian Militant groups. It would be ashame to let these fringe groups define the Christian Identity. We should not let that happen to those of other religions either for it will, eventually, come full circle!!!

What I don’t get (other than how we can have such an idiot for a president) is why would the Muslims even want this??? They have to know that it will only breed more anger towards them. The good news is this may be the straw that breaks the camels back to bring the U.S.A. back to a true United Country. I do feel so sorry for the poor souls that lost loved ones in 911, what a total slap in their face. I’m sorry.

I am trying to identify the symbols and costume worn by Isaac Levi, freemason and sexton of Shearith Israel, NYC, in a formal portgrait photograph taken in 1895. Can anyone please recommend a good source? Or, is anyone willing to look over the image?

I would like to add a quote from Rabbi (and Brother) Pereira Mendes in the spirit of the quote you gave. All the best!
Pierre

"There is a legend that, when Adam and Eve were turned out of Eden or earthy paradise, an angel smashed the gates, and the fragments flying all over the earth are the precious stones. We can carry the legend further. The precious stones were picked up by the various religions and philosophers of the world. Each claimed and claims that its own fragment alone reflects the light of heaven, forgetting the setting and incrustations which time has added. Patience my brother. In God's own time we shall, all of us, fit our fragments together and reconstruct the gates of paradise. There will be an era of reconciliation of all living faiths and systems, the era of all being in at-one-ment, or atonement, with God. Through the gates shall all people pass to the foot of God's throne."
" The Dawn of Religious Pluralism: Voices from the World's Parliament of Religions, 1893" pp. 328-330

The Scottish Rite in America actually has it's roots in good part with Jews coming from the Caribbean to Charleston SC in the early part of the 1800s. More recently, R. Raymond Apple (RCA), of Australia was Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of New South Wales, R. Henry Pereira Mendes, co founder of the OU and JTS, was an active freemason and one time Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of New York. R. Sabato Morais, co founder of JTS. Former Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz of the Hertz Chumash, former Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie. Rabbi Seymour Atlas, longtime rabbi in the southern US, active freemason and active in the Scottish Rite (also taught hebrew to MLK). This is a short list of Orthodox Rabbis active in Freemasonry - there are an have been many more Conservative and Reform rabbis and laity active in the Craft.

My father was a proud Mason, and always defended them as being very open to Jews (I am not sure that was true in Germany, where he was born.) Thanks for an informative article.

On a personal note, I am going to miss you Rabbi. We have spent much time together and you are quite unique. At least I will be able to follow you on this blog!! Enjoy yourself and best wishes!!
